Загальна мета проєкту

SUNRISE спрямований на підтримку українських аспірантів у галузі наук про навколишнє середовище, які зіткнулися з викликами війни.

Проєкт передбачає

  • створення стійкої університетської інфраструктури,
  • розробку навчальних програм, що відповідають викликам воєнного та післявоєнного періодів
  • підвищення наукової конкурентоспроможності України.

Основні завдання проєкту

  1. Забезпечення стійкості навчальної інфраструктури для аспірантів у галузі екології через розробку інформаційно-комунікаційні технологій та інструментів, що гарантують безперервний доступ до мобільності, наукового супровіду, захисту дисертацій та мережевих ресурсів.
  2. Підтримка воєнної стійкості та післявоєнного відновлення України шляхом розробки навчальних курсів і підвищення кваліфікації викладачів з питань надзвичайної готовності, відновлення екосистем, сталого сільського господарства.
  3. Зміцнення перспектив розвитку українських університетів у післявоєнний період через створення рекомендацій щодо стратегічного планування відновлення та покращення академічної та наукової діяльності.

Очікувані результати

  • Інформаційно-комунікаційна онлайн платформа для аспірантського навчання, яка включає електронні навчальні модулі для організації дистанційного навчання, електронні модулі підтримки наукових досліджень для аналізу та обробки наукових даних, а також електронне портфоліо для збереження і систематизації результатів навчання і наукової діяльності аспірантів.
  • Нові курси та модулі обсягом 10 кредитів ECTS, які охоплюють питання воєнної стійкості та післявоєнного відновлення з особливою увагою до наслідків, пов’язаних із війною
  • Спільне наукове керівництво українськими аспірантами з наданням різних форм ресурсної підтримки
  • Навчальні заходи для викладачів і студентів, присвячені актуальним проблемам;
  • Настанови з підвищення стійкості для підтримки процесу післявоєнного відновлення, підготовки наукових кадрів та розвитку конкурентоспроможних досліджень у галузі наук про навколишнє середовище, а також для організації інших заходів і обміну знаннями з партнерами з ЄС.

Odesa I.I. Mechnikov National University – SUNRISE Project Update

  1. General overview of activities (Jan–June 2025)
  • Participation in the Kick-off Meeting of the SUNRISE project (27–28 January 2025, Tartu, Estonia), represented by Prof. V.A. Ovcharuk (Project PI) and I.A. Khomenko (Project Manager).
  • Preparation of an amendment to the Cooperation Agreement for the creation of a joint doctoral school in ecological and climate policy, management, and technoecology (specialties 101 Ecology, 103 Earth Sciences, 183 Environmental Protection Technologies). This was connected with the merger of Odesa State Environmental University into ONU.
  • Organization of training within the international scientific-practical conference “Climate Services: Education and Science” (17 April 2025) – topic: “Living Lab Approach for Real-World Impact in Urban Areas.”
  • Participation in the International and National Doctoral School INTENSE Open Lecture Series – Prof. T.A. Safranov delivered a lecture (25 May 2025).
  • Contribution to the survey questionnaire on challenges faced by PhD students (Ukraine and EU), to support the development of Guidelines on Resilience.
  • Participation in the round table “Development of the INTENSE Doctoral School: Experience, Challenges, and Perspectives in Ukraine within the SUNRISE Project” (17 April 2025).
  • Participation in the round table “Ecology is a Priority” (14 March 2025, Kharkiv National University).
  1. Plans for the new academic year (2025–2026)
  • Launch and further development of the online learning platform with e-learning and e-research modules.
  • Development and pilot implementation of new 10 ECTS interdisciplinary courses on war resilience and post-war recovery.
  • Expansion of joint PhD supervision practices with EU partners.
  • Strengthening of research cooperation and exchange through SUNRISE events.
  • Further promotion of the INTENSE Doctoral School, ensuring integration of merged institutions.
  1. Dissemination efforts (Jan–June 2025)
  1. Report on the state of the INTENSE Doctoral School (up to 10 min)
  • The INTENSE Doctoral School is being further developed under the SUNRISE framework, now integrating the merged Odesa State Environmental University into ONU.
  • The School provides a joint doctoral program in ecology, Earth sciences, and environmental technologies, focusing on resilience, climate, and sustainability.
  • Activities in 2025 included lectures, round tables, and curriculum development, with strong participation of Ukrainian and EU partners.
  • Future steps include consolidation of joint governance, enhancement of mobility, and preparation of resilience guidelines.

  • Dear colleagues,
  • On behalf of Odesa I.I. Mechnikov National University, I am pleased to present a short overview of our activities within the SUNRISE project since January 2025, as well as our plans for the new academic year, dissemination efforts, and the state of the INTENSE Doctoral School.
  • First, regarding our activities over the past six months.
    In January, our team took part in the Kick-off Meeting of the project, which was hosted by the Estonian University of Life Sciences in Tartu. This meeting was an important step in defining our common vision and practical steps for the SUNRISE project.
  • We also prepared an amendment to the Cooperation Agreement on the creation of a joint doctoral school. This is particularly significant because of the recent merger of Odesa State Environmental University into ONU. The amendment allows us to strengthen and expand the INTENSE doctoral program in ecological and climate policy, management, and technoecology.
  • In April, during the international scientific-practical conference “Climate Services: Education and Science”, we organized a training session entitled “Living Lab Approach for Real-World Impact in Urban Areas.” This format allowed participants to exchange ideas on how academic knowledge can be applied directly to urban sustainability challenges.
  • In March and April, our representatives actively participated in round tables dedicated to doctoral education and sustainability in Ukraine. One of these events was “Ecology is a Priority” at Kharkiv National University, and another was “Development of the INTENSE Doctoral School: Experience, Challenges, and Perspectives in Ukraine within the Sunrise Project.”
  • In May, Professor Safranov gave an open lecture in the framework of the INTENSE Doctoral School, further strengthening cooperation between Ukrainian and European colleagues. In addition, we contributed to the preparation of a survey on the challenges faced by PhD students in Ukraine and the EU. The results will help us prepare Guidelines on Resilience, which is one of the core expected outcomes of the project.
  • As for our plans for the upcoming academic year.
    We are working on launching the online learning platform for PhD training, which will include e-learning modules, research support tools, and e-portfolios. We will also develop and pilot interdisciplinary courses worth 10 ECTS credits, focusing on war resilience and post-war recovery.
  • In addition, we aim to expand joint PhD supervision practices with our European partners and strengthen academic exchanges. Finally, we will continue consolidating and promoting the INTENSE Doctoral School, with a focus on its new structure after the merger of institutions.
  • Regarding dissemination efforts.
    We are actively maintaining the SUNRISE in Ukraine Facebook group and the Erasmus+ SUNRISE page, where we publish news and updates. Information is also regularly posted on the official website of our university, both in Ukrainian and English. In addition, our staff contributed to dissemination by giving open lectures, moderating round tables, and participating in scientific conferences.
  • And finally, a few words on the INTENSE Doctoral School.
    The Doctoral School remains a central part of our SUNRISE activities. It now integrates Odesa State Environmental University into Odesa I.I. Mechnikov National University, making it a stronger and more comprehensive platform for doctoral education.
  • The INTENSE program offers a joint doctoral track in ecology, Earth sciences, and environmental technologies. Its special focus is on resilience, climate change, and sustainable development. In 2025, the School has already organized lectures, trainings, and round tables, with broad participation of Ukrainian and EU partners. Our next steps will be to consolidate governance, ensure mobility opportunities, and develop resilience guidelines to support young researchers in the current challenging environment.
  • To conclude, I would like to emphasize that SUNRISE is not only about academic cooperation but also about building resilience – for our institutions, our researchers, and for the next generation of Ukrainian scientists.
