V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University is the top-rated UA University (QS and THE version) with 212 years of history; it is a leading Research and Educational Institution in Ukraine. Today the University has 20 Schools which provide training for specialists in 61 majors. KKNU employs for teaching and research 308 Doctors of Sciences and Doctors of Letters, full professors and about 800 PhDs, associate professors including 15 academicians and corresponding members of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and Sectoral Academies.
The School of Ecology prepares specialists in environmental protection and ecology, based on broad inter-disciplinary approach; the direction of training is “Ecology, Environment Protection and Balanced Nature Management”. The School of Ecology provides education for BSc, MSc and PhD degrees.
During last 5 years the School of Ecology took part in the following international projects: Tempus project “Improvement of education on environmental management”, Tempus project “Qualifications Framework in Environmental Science at Ukrainian Universities”, Open Society Foundation project “Regional Seminars for Excellence in Teaching”, British Council project “Alternative Energy: Education and Science”, a Shell project “Development of Master Program on Eco-Geo-Chemistry of Oil and Gas”.
The School of Ecology has its own Dissertation Defense Board (D 64.051.04), where 42 Candidate and 8 Doctoral dissertations were defended.
At the School of Ecology BSs and MSs curricular have been up-dated in the framework of international projects and currently they provide modern competencies those fully correspond to EU practice and approaches. However PhD curriculum was not revised and it should be up-dated taking into account EU experience, competencies from existing BSs and MSs curricular and new list of specialties approved by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. It should include new courses and up-dated contents for the existing ones.
